The Claremont Colleges Psyko Taiko, founded in Fall 2003, is a 5C club that shares an interest in the taiko drumming art form. A very DIY club, we have progressed from using taped-over five-gallon buckets as our “drums” to making our own set of core drums, as well as their stands and other miscellaneous items. Our name is a portmanteau of the English word, “psycho” (crazy), and the Japanese word “最高” (saikō, great). We aspire to be a mixture of both, which can perhaps be summarized by the word “awesome.” The Psyko goal is to make taiko a joy to watch, because it is a joy to perform.
